in cancer Research 31, 1682-1689, 1971(PMID: 4330634), Dr. Irie established SMCXX III (MM48), and SMCXX V (MM47) ascitic tumor
cell lines in Research Institute for Medical Science, Tokyo University.
After her moving to UCLA, Dr. Tachibana succeeded passaging both cell lines
and also solid tumor cell line SMCXX VI. At 26th passage, at 604 days,
he succeeded in converting the solid tumor to ascitic form and named it
as MM46. The names of tumor cell lines were designated by Dr. Tachibana.
